At Marvel Publishers, we offer expert advice and professional services to assist independent authors in getting their books published in digital as well as printed format.

Our dynamic and creative team is committed to providing authors with quality products that have great marketing potential.

As an independent author, you remain the copyright holder and have the right to market, sell and distribute your book in any way you wish.

Though a book may be ‘self-published’ our aim is to ensure that it looks absolutely professional and can compete with the best the commercial trade has to offer.

Getting your manuscript ready for publication

Editing is one of the most important factors that will influence the credibility of your book and ultimately also your book sales.

The degree to which you personally edit your thoughts and writing, combined with the degree to which you invest in professional editing will ultimately play a large role in the standard of your end result.

We highly recommend that you find an editor to help you with the polishing of your manuscript before submitting it to us for publication.

If you need assistance in this regard, we will gladly advise you on finding an editor to provide you with the services you require. At Marvel Publishers we work with a number of freelance editors and will team you up with an editor suited to the type of manuscript and level of expertise require Great cover design is essential

The popular idiom is “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” but despite how true it might be in an idealistic sense, the reality of the book industry is that the vast majority of readers do indeed use the cover of a book as a deciding factor in not only whether or not they should buy the book, but if they will enjoy it as well.

If you want people to take a chance on an author they haven’t heard of, you need to have a great cover.

At Marvel Publishers we understand the requirements of effective book cover design. A striking cover design is about more than a good choice of imagery, colour scheme and fitting typography. Sometimes less is more, and a minimalist cover design that carries across the message or mood of the story can be highly attractive

Professional page layout and typesetting makes all the difference

Interior layout and book formatting helps bring a manuscript to life. Readers pick up on a lot from the design choices made in books, whether they realize it or not.

When your book doesn’t quite look like the books they’ve become accustomed to reading all of their lives, it throws up a red flag and plays into the snap judgments they form before they’ve even read the first page.

Likewise, when your book is as beautiful and polished as any other book on a bookstore shelf, it gives your book credibility. This is what we mean when we say an independently published book should not look ‘self-published’.

Page layout and type-setting of text is a specialized field and the right tools and expertise are required to ensure a professional end result. At Marvel Publishers we use Adobe InDesign for page layout and type-setting.

It is the professional standard for interior book formatting and our graphic designers are trained in this niche area of design

Enter the world of digital books

An e-book is a book in electronic format. It is downloaded to a computer, PC, Mac, laptop, tablet, smartphone or any other kind of reading device, and is read on the screen.

It can have numbered pages, table of contents, pictures and graphics, exactly like a printed book. It can be published as a stand-alone digital title or as an additional version of a book that is also available in printed format.

The advantage of an e-book is that it is relatively cheap to produce compared to a printed version and can be made available on an international platform for unlimited digital sales. Unlike a printed book, it can never run ‘out of stock’ and no trees have to be sacrificed!

At Marvel Publishers we are experienced in e-book design, which is a specialized field. We create e-books in e-pub and e-pdf versions, as well as Kindle version that can be uploaded to Amazon Kindle. Some authors prefer to upload the e-book to their own Amazon Kindle account.

Alternatively we can upload it to the Marvel Publishers Amazon Kindle account. Payment to authors takes place on a quarterly basis. Browse our catalogue on Amazon Kindle here.

ISBN Registration with Marvel Publishers

ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number The purpose of the ISBN is to establish and identify one title or edition of a title from one specific publisher and is unique to that edition, allowing for more efficient marketing of products by booksellers, libraries, universities, wholesalers and distributors.

If your book is published in both printed and digital format, each of these formats should have a unique ISBN number. The ISBN number is used to produce a bar code that will appear on the back cover of the printed version. The ISBN number is used to produce a bar code that will appear on the back cover of the printed version of your book.

If you are printing less than 50 copies of your book and do not intend it for retail distribution, you do not require an ISBN. If you are however printing 100 or more copies and wish to distribute them for retail purposes, an ISBN is essential.

Under the Legal Deposit Act of 1997 you will be required to provide one free copy of your book along with an information sheet to the six areas of legal deposit. Marvel Publishers will take care of this process for you. We do not charge a fee for the issuing of an ISBN number, but there is a fee for the admin involved in the registration and legal deposit.

Good quality printing cannot be compromised on

Good quality printing is non-negotiable and at Marvel we have very high standards in this regard. We pride ourselves in the excellent quality of our printed books and the fact that we are able to offer very competitive pricing.

There are various options available with regards to the type of paper stock selected, use of colour, as well as types of binding and finishing of the printed product. We can also produce high quality colour printing for children’s book etc.

At Marvel Publishers, we have the knowledge and experience to understand what would be the best choice of paper stock and finish depending on the type of publication, and will advise the author, always bearing in mind that the process must be cost[1]effective.

We will provide a fully bound and finished printed proof for final approval and sign off by the author before books are printed. The digital printing process works best for our authors as books can be supplied in small quantities ranging from 25 books to 500 books.

There is no obligation to order large quantities of books as part of the publication agreement. We encourage authors to order smaller quantities in order to test the market demand before ordering larger quantities of books.

Spread the word

In our experience, people have very different ideas about what they understand the meaning of ‘marketing’ to be. When it comes to marketing your book, we see it as making people aware of the existence of your book and bringing it to the attention of the target market it was intended for.

Ultimately the goal of marketing is to stimulate sales of the book, but for a first time author is it also about becoming known as author. The publication of a first book is just one step of the journey. We encourage authors to become active on social media and maximize their exposure in the media.

Book reviews are also important and this is something we encourage. To get feedback on your work can be of great value in your development as an author. Through various Facebook groups and platforms such as Good reads authors can become part of the book community.

As independent author, the responsibility for activating an effective marketing campaign lies with the author. We do however consult and advise, pointing the author in the right direction.

For direct marketing activities, we offer a range of marketing resources such as digital flyers for use on social media, business cards, posters and roller banners for book launches etc.

We also encourage the author to enlist the services of a publicist. There are some excellent publicity agencies in South Africa that we have a close working relationship with. Many authors who have published through us have been interviewed on radio programmes and TV programmes such as Morning Live on SABC 2. We will gladly advise and refer you to the relevant service providers who can assist with publicity campaigns.

Ultimately the independent author should always realise the final responsibility rests with themselves and they should never rely on anyone to care as much for their work as they do. That said, there really is a lot that can be done as far as marketing is concerned if one think outside of the box. The author should realise that the job is never ‘done’ – it is an on-going process.

Sell your books and make a profit

For an independent author, the most profitable route is the direct sale of books. Many independent authors sell their books directly via a website or networks that they have access to. The advantage is that the profit earned does not have to be shared with a retailer or distribution agent.

However, many independent authors aspire for their books to be widely available at retail book stores across the country. There are independent book selling agencies who can assist the author with getting his or her book distributed to various book retailers, including retail chains such as Bargain Books and Exclusive Books, as well as independent book stores across South Africa.

It will however depend on the market demand. Your book may be offered to stores by a representative of the selling agency, but the buyer for the store will decide if the book is a fit for their reading audience. If they believe it will sell in their store, they may place an order.

Unfortunately orders and sales cannot be guaranteed. Also bear in mind that retail commission of up to 50% of the selling price applies as well as an agent’s fee. In most case the terms are ‘sale or return’.
